my oldest brother clark was in AU for 6 months sometime during the 60's i think, with the navy (they were on their way to vietnam). the only thing i really remember about that trip was some delicious ginger snaps he brought home, i have always been a gingersnap fan. they were hard as a rock. today with my tea i had some just as delicious gingersnaps i got yesterday at the bi-lo (the local supermarket). sometimes memories are better than the real thing, but not in this case!
do you remember those cookies clark?

I sure do. I believe I mailed both you and Allen cans of ginger snaps.
I was with GE in 1972 when I was in Australia...NSW and SA. For six months I worked in offices in suburban Sydney and Adelaide. Each morning and afternoon the whole office staff would pause for "tea."
Tea ladies would trundle carts through the office bearing plates of bisquits and pots of tea. There was a choice of "savory" (non-sweet) bisquits, and sweet bisquits (cookies). The ginger snaps were the most different sweet bisquits...very strong taste of ginger, and very hard. They came in a large returnable can: once the contents were gone, the bisquit company would collect the empty can and sell you a sealed and refilled one. Australians in those days threw away very little...do you notice the same thing today? Or is it now pretty much like the US?
